The Power of a Name: Crafting a Memorable Brand Name
Dive into the art and science of creating memorable and impactful brand names. A brand's name is often the first point of contact between the business and its audience, making it a crucial element of brand identity. Explore the principles and techniques behind successful brand naming strategies and learn how to develop names that resonate with your target audience.
Your brand name is quite often the first impression you’ll make on a potential customer. It can set the stage for everything that follows, so choosing the right one is really important.
So what should you consider when crafting a Great Brand Name?
- Make it Memorable: It should be easy to remember, spell, and pronounce. While a few luxury brands can get away with having names that often trip people up, I wouldn’t advise this for you. Those brands have huge marketing budgets, and very exclusive brand personalities. So aim for something memorable and easy for folks to talk about with their friends without feeling awkward the might be pronouncing it wrong. [Show Schweppes]
- Make it Meaningful: Does it reflect your brand's values, products, or target audience? I see so many companies called things like JTM builders or PW Consultants. These letters may mean something to the founders, but they mean nothing to potential customers. While there are some famous brands that use acronyms, if you don’t have a huge marketing budget, it’s a lost opportunity to say something wrong about your band and have a point of difference.
- Is it versatile, future-proof and adaptable? Think about how it might work in the future or across different marketing channels. For example, using pop-culture references like "No Cap Technology” might not age well. Or you might regret calling your company “Ultimate Cakes” if you decide to expand your product line into muffins and ice creams in the future. So think about how your your name will relevant as your brand grows and evolves? Is it at risk of being turned into an acronym? Especially when you try to fit the name into small social media profiles.
Ultimately, a strong brand name should be flexible enough to evolve with the business without losing its core identity.
Traps to watch out for:
Be mindful of your own personal bias. While it's natural to want a name that appeals to you, remember that its primary purpose is to attract and engage your audience. It's their response that really matters. So avoid the temptation of choosing a name solely because it has personal significance. (your dog, your family crest, your favourite sports team). This will be meaningless to everyone else. You’re not trying to sell products or services to yourself.
Häagen-Dazs is a cool example of a brand name designed with the customer in mind. Though it sounds like a Scandinavian word, it's actually a made-up combination of syllables they created to evoke a sense of European sophistication and luxury. This ice cream brand was actually founded in New York in the 1960s. This brand name sounds sophisticated and foreign, which aligns beautifully with Häagen-Dazs' premium image.
Remember: There's no one-size-fits-all approach to naming your brand. The best brand name is the one that perfectly captures the essence of your brand and resonates with your target audience.
DOMAIN Once you’ve landed on a few names you like, be sure to check the availability of those domain names and company registrations. There’s nothing worse than spending weeks developing the best name and designing a logo, only to discover someone else has registered the company and the website address.
